About the Business
The Hearst Corporation is an American mass media and business information conglomerate based in New York. Founded by William Randolph Hearst as an owner of newspapers, the company’s holdings now include a wide variety of media including newspapers, magazines, television channels and television stations, including the San Francisco Chronicle, the Houston Chronicle, Cosmopolitan and Esquire. Hearst owns 50% of broadcasting firm A&E Networks and 20% of the sports broadcaster ESPN with partner The Walt Disney Company.
The Business Challenges
Hearst is strategically transforming their business into the digital age to meet consumer demand for relevant content in real-time and across multiple channels. This transformation requires best of breed technology for high-quality delivery at the lowest cost while still meeting the customer demands. Hearst has expanded its use of cloud technology from AWS to Azure and has embraced a multi-cloud approach. Like many large companies that experienced rapid cloud adoption, Hearst reached a point where it required greater governance and visibility into its cloud assets and resources to make better decisions.
To accomplish these initiatives, Hearst required a partner who was aligned with their goals and has a deep technical understanding of cloud. It was Hearst leadership that recognized the previous partner was not meeting the requirements necessary to help Hearst increase their cloud adoption and to help modernize their business. The company needed to engage the help of an experienced cloud transformation partner to break through and meet those objectives. Hearst then partnered with 2nd Watch, for its deep cloud expertise and successes modernizing large companies.
The 2nd Watch Solution
2nd Watch helped Hearst and their business units establish cloud frameworks for governance to ensure resources are properly utilized and environments are secure with the visibility for management to make informed decisions. 2nd Watch leveraged Azure Resource Manager (ARM) templates to track the deployment of Azure Services. 2nd Watch built a Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipeline to create an ARM template repository using Azure DevOps and automated testing using Pester for universal standards and automated deployment of resources. With integration into Hearst’s ITSM system, ServiceNow, automated resource management, provisioning tracking and management in place Hearst had the ability to modernize applications and test new technologies.
One example is Comics Kingdom, an application running on multiple websites to aggregate comics for syndication both digitally and in print worldwide. 2nd Watch modernized the application by leveraging Azure AppService with Azure MySQL database making it more reliable for customers and eliminating the need for provisioning of VMs, patching or retirement of VMs. By modernizing a workload like this Hearst eliminated the need to manage future provisioning, patching and retiring of resources.
Another example of modernization is Hearst’s ability to test products like Windows Virtual Desktop on Azure. Azure’s Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) provides users with the only multi-session Windows 10 experience, optimizes for O365, a simplified migration of Windows Server and the ability to launch new Windows deployments easily.
The Business Benefits
Hearst’s business benefits from tightening cloud governance will protect the company from unwarranted costs and security risks as they scale their cloud services. With additional visibility into their cloud resources through their current tool set, Hearst has the ability to help the business units innovate while protecting them from unnecessary threats. The company is well positioned to deploy Azure resources at scale while having the visibility across the organization.
